Gwen Robinson

Gwen Robinson was editor-at-large of Nikkei Asia, an English-language website and magazine launched in late 2013 by Nikkei, the Japanese media group, where she commissioned, edited, and wrote articles. Since 2013, she had been a senior fellow at the Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, specialising in Myanmar and more generally on Southeast Asian politics, economics and security. From 1995 to 2013, she worked with the Financial Times as a senior editor and foreign correspondent. From 2019 to 2021 she was president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand, where she continued to serve on the FCCT‘s board until her passing on 29 March 2025.

She joined the institute at Chulalongkorn University in mid-2013 from the Financial Times, where her last post was Bangkok bureau chief covering Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Over nearly 20 years, she held various positions with the FT in the UK, US and Asia, including eight years in London as the FT’s comment editor, foreign desk editor and online news editor, and postings in the FT’s Tokyo, Jakarta, Washington, Bangkok and other bureaus.

From 1993 to 1995 she was North Asia correspondent for The Times of London, and from 1990 to 1993 was an editor/writer at the Nikkei Weekly, based in Tokyo. For much of the 1980s, she was Southeast Asia correspondent for US, Australian and UK media organisations based in Manila and then Bangkok. She was based in Thailand where she researched, commissioned, and wrote articles and academic papers. A British and Australian citizen, she was born in Japan, educated in Australia and studied Asian history and sociology at the Australian National University in Canberra.
